Plastic Waste in Australia
Following our LOI from Australian businesses

Australia is facing a growing plastic waste challenge while rapidly investing in circular economy solutions. According to the Australian Government’s latest Australian Plastics Flows and Fates Report, the country consumed around 4 million tonnes of plastic products and packaging in 2023–24, while 3.2 million tonnes reached end-of-life. Yet only 14% of plastic waste was recovered through recycling or energy recovery. (DCCEEW)
To tackle the issue, Australia is expanding domestic recycling infrastructure and circular economy initiatives. More than 50 new or upgraded recycling facilities are now operating across the country through the Recycling Modernisation Fund, adding the capacity to divert an estimated 500,000 tonnes of waste from landfill annually. Australia is also introducing stronger policies, including bans on several single-use plastics, soft plastics collection programs, recycled-content targets, and investments in advanced recycling technologies. Experts and industry leaders are increasingly calling for “extended producer responsibility,” requiring manufacturers to take responsibility for the full lifecycle of plastic packaging. (News.com.au)
The Australian experience highlights both the scale of the plastic waste challenge and the opportunity for innovation in recycling, waste-to-value technologies, and circular manufacturing systems.
